IPF TALK #3 : Post-Covid in Southeast Asia on Tourism Perspective

The economic sector that affected the most caused by COVID-19 is Tourism. Every tourism sectors such as hotels, guesthouses, and even flights are having a crisis because people can’t go on holiday and nobody’s traveling.

In Post-COVID 19 era, domestic travel will be the most potential sector to be developed. Many factors cause it:

1. Travelling in Post-COVID 19 era means we already adapted to the pandemic era and ready to travel by adhering to health protocols.

2. What we have to do to traveling in Post-COVID 19 era is:

- Focusing on Indonesia domestic market;

- Conducting campaign on safety instruction on how to travel during a new normal period;

- Reducing air ticket and promoting safe flight during the new normal period;

- Concerning recuperation of the Indonesian economy.

If we support domestic tourism, that means we help people who are affected by COVID-19.

3. If we travel in Post-COVID 19 era, it means we are not only surviving in the pandemic era, we also already adapted to every health protocol.

How does investment from other countries affect the tourism sector in Indonesia?

1. If Indonesia gets the investment especially in the tourism sector, it does not only have to pay attention to the potential of the tourism sector but also we have to concern the sustainability of the tourism sector.

2. Sustainable tourism is related to money-resilience and people also have to be resilient. To make it happen we have to pay attention to:

- The Government response to the resilience;

- Technology innovation in the pandemic era

- Local belongingness, to protect what locals have.

- Consumers and employees are confident.

3. Sustainable tourism is also related to the transformation to the new global economic order.

4. Locals who get the investment for domestic tourism have to look for a way to return on investment and also to maximize the use of investment.

The important things that should be strengthened to improve the community capacity especially those who work in the tourism sector to face the foreign investment which will enter Indonesia:

1. Locals should take part if the big investment comes, by improving hospitality, community, and awareness.

2. Locals should get education about how their tourism is potential for the tourist.

3. Locals should know how to sustain their tourism.

Integration between countries in South-East Asia in the tourism sector began with the arrangement between Indonesia and Malaysia which contained that they have to support each country in every sector, and one of them is the tourism sector. However, the pandemic is not finished yet and this arrangement can’t be happening now. The things that we can do now is only to support local business to encourage the development of the domestic tourism sector.
